The photo was taken in 1966, by a TIME photographer who was accompanying the Marine infantry battalion we were air lifting up near the border with Laos. He mailed me a copy of the photo I never actually knew he was taking. I had just received a commission to 2nd Lt three months earlier at our base camp at Ky Ha, Vietnam.
